OUIL505: Applied Illustration Introduction

Introduction

This module is very much about contextualisation and application; applying knowledge to things that I've already learnt. and discovering where I want to go with my practice. It will be a summarisation of level four and five, defining the parameters of my practice, from a route of informed research in visual culture and the real world. It is still just a module. I will make decisions and see what happens by experimenting, trying and failing.

Important requirements/factors:

  • Test out some decisions before level 6
  • Find out who I am as a practitioner, what I want to value in my work
  • Undergo a breadth of detailed research to inform practice
  • Look at audience and content: driven by social, technological and ethical concerns
  • Ongoing analysis of this: producing and proposing
  • TAKE RISKS AND TRY NEW THINGS
  • Do not play it safe
  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT IS ESSENTIAL: success is based on how you manage your time
  • Conceptual side of work is just as important
  • How do I adapt the work to point of sale?
  • Whatever I choose to do, make sure the possibilities are endless
  • How has my practice developed? Capitalise on this
Points of interest:
  • What are people out there doing?
  • What is it about?
  • ISSUES IN SOCIETY
  • Respond to texts that already exist
Starting points:
  • Editorial and Reportage
  • Object and Environment
  • Character and Narrative
  • Children's Books and Education
  • Product and Packaging
  • Publishing and Book Design
Task 1:

In groups we had to choose three of the above topics and write down everything that comes to mind when thinking of the specific topic. My group and I chose: Product and Packaging, Children's Books and Education and Publishing and Book Design. Following that we had to spend an hour researching one of the themes in detail; I looked at Publishing and Book Design, and briefly had a look at the definition of publishing, what book publishing companies are required to do and also found a range of examples.

Task 2:

With our printed research we placed our images on categorical tables  and moved around these tables writing down references to social, cultural and ethical factors relating to the different categories. Collectively, this created a really wide range of potential ideas and concepts to explore and produce similar outcomes.
(some of them got pretty mixed up...)

Evaluation of today/action Plan:

I feel a mixture of excitement and being extremely overwhelmed by the concept of this project. It is the same equivalent work load of a final major project for art foundation, yet on top of three other modules with different projects in each. So I'm really going to have to put 110% in if I want to succeed. However, I am looking forward to having the opportunity to focus in on my strengths and favourite processes and produce something that I can channel all of my interests into.

This week I will:
  • Have a think about which category to work within
  • Do lots of research! Primary and Secondary
  • NOT leave this on the back burner...
