LIGHT

Our task is to produce three illustrations that communicate a different work, mine being 'light'. In analogue form on A3 sheets, we have to produce one illustration just using image, one using type and image and the last using type AS image.

I initially struggled to come up with concepts to do with light as I thought they would all be so generic and obvious, but here are my ideas:

The world being illuminated by electricity

Concept as 'light' in terms of mass

Timeline of light

Lightsabers..had to be done!

A light house, and a house made of lights

Harry Potter- 'lumos'

Type as image, light beams

Cityscape illuminated with the word 'light'

'Light at the end of the tunnel'

I was surprised that my feedback was pretty positive this time, the group were enthusiastic about my ideas and prompted me on which of my ideas would be the most successful in terms of using image as type, and which type to go with images. This time I really took this on board rather than staying in my comfort zone.

I began experimenting with paper cutting, and I actually really enjoyed the method of using bold coloured paper. I could have tried using paint/print however having enjoyed the process I believe that would push me to produce the best results.
I used a strong colour scheme of black yellow and highlights of silver. Black and yellow highly contrast, and when put together really compliment each other and represent the difference between light and dark.

I have created three A4 roughs to try and test my ideas.

  1. Image- Globe concealed in a lightbulb. Originally this idea had text underneath stating 'let there be light', representing the use of energy and artificial light on planet earth, and how the human race is so dependant on electricity as opposed to when the world was created and natural light was the only source.
  2. Type and Image- Timeline of light sources. Showing how light has evolved over the years originating from cavemen discovering fire.
  3. Type as Image- A cityscape at night with the word 'light' illuminated from selected windows.
