After Effects 3

Today's Aims: Make sure I'm confident on the visual side of AE

Another possibility in how we can work with photoshop files; how we put them togther and how we work with a composition in after effects. In both, we work with layers.

Rather than working with individual files, we can work in PS with layers and how we can use these layers to work in AE.

Each asset is saved on a different layer

We have the option to import individual layers

However we are going to import as a composition (middle option)

We now have a folder containing each layer

Composition > composition settings (just to make sure it is the correct size) Kind of like checking the canvas size in PS.

Check preset and duration.

If we select all of the layers, we can manipulate them simultaneously e.g. rotate

Rather thasn each layer being the size of the composition and having the same anchor point, the anchor point is the centre of that individual layer. e.g. now when I work with rotation, each layer is rotating around its own anchor point.

Similar to ID, the files that we import into AE need to be stored in one folder so that AE can find them.

If we want to replace a layer/ if we lose one etc, we can go to file, replace footage.

File > dependencies > collect files

This will create a new folder and save your project and its assets all in the one place.

Timeline Buttons

Shy Button

The Shy button will hide a layer; although this will need to be activated before we can use the function (in the switches above.

Rasterise Button

The rasterise button, the quality will be retained as if it were as smooth as illustrator vectors.

Motion Blur Button

Motion blur makes movement look a little more realistic. It also increases the ram preview time. Remember to turn back on before you export.

How we can work with effects

How we can apply an effect to an individual layer:

Select layer > Effects and presets

Drag and drop which one you'd like to use onto the layer.

Open the Effects and Control panel:

We can now set key frames with our effects in our timelines; so applying effects to individual layers.

How we can apply effects the whole composition

Adjustment layers:  allows us to create a layer that contains adjustments

When we adjust the effect that we have added, it changes all of the layers below due to the position of the layer ( at the top of all of the others )

Toggle Switches/ Modes

Track Matt (acts as a mask)

When we have two layers to work with, we can select the alpha matt option to give the illusion of a window.

Some additional advances on this motion could include transforming the circle's properties, for example if we use key frames to give the effect of zooming into the circle.
