Screen Print Workshop/ Progress Review

I didn't get the message that we had to produce two positive images ready for today's screen printing workshop; so I quickly had to rustle some up the night before (not cool- I must be more organised next time)

My initial ideas for a screen print included:

  • Continuation with the medical bottles and jars, maybe produce a pattern or a sequence
  • Producing something in relation to Sacks' storytelling qualities
  • Illustrating a quote
I decided that illustrating a quote of his would be a new and innovative approach to producing a screen printed image.

My positives:

The process

Screen printing is a really long-winded process, that is always high in demand in the college. I have only screen printed twice before, but this time I feel like I was getting the jist of it a little more.
I feel like screen printing would be a viable option for the prints I have to produce to answer this brief, as I find that it is the most exciting form of printing out of the three options. I'm also really keen to become good at screen printing, as I am not overly- confident with the process, so this may push me to try and produce some high quality images.

Reflection

I'm pleased with the way my print turned out considering the fact that I put it together so last minute. Although when I looked at the complexity of other people's prints, and when my own print was reviewed, I felt extremely disheartened and that I had not put in enough effort. Especially when Teresa said that she didn't really understand the image, that she looked at it and couldn't relate to Oliver Sacks and that it just looked like a box of orange juice listening to music.

It felt like such a kick in the teeth!!!

Problem Analysis

Although hearing that has made me realise that I need to really focus in on my image making now for 504. I desperately want to do so well in this brief so over the weekend I am really going to try my best to come up with some good concepts for images.

Problem Solving

Having to deal with a block is something that I have faced on numerous occasions, but isn't really ideal at this stage of the brief. Teresa and I suggested that I do the following to try and overcome this block:

  • Think laterally
  • Look at parts of the brain
  • Relate the images to Oliver Sacks
  • What is he trying to say?
  • How can I bring my own interests into this?
  • Look at other quotes
  • Do more about his life, what did he love?
  • Put motifs from his life and work in images that I have already done
  • Time myself: get everything out of my system to do with Oliver Sacks
My deadline for this personal task will be Tuesday 17th, so I am going to spend the weekend trying to get my act together!
