Wear a Mask of Yourself

As the mask is supposed to be a representation of our personalities,
my ideas progressed from my star sign symbol, which is Leo. My
friends back home would sometimes make the joke that I was quite
a 'fiery character' for many reasons, one being my messy red 'maine'
of hair. Plus my favourite film is The Lion King, so I thought it
would be appropriate to make a mask in the shape of a lion.

I decided the lions face would be kept simplistic in black and white,
with the Leo symbol being the main focal point, Whereas the lions
maine would be made up from individual abstract pieces of card,
so I tried out some tribal style shapes and patterns on watercolour
backgrounds using a palette of warm colours. I also tried a similar
technique using more bold coloured paper and card.
To make the patterns stand out from their background I used white
tippex and black sharpie marker. I then assembled each piece of
card onto the mask using hot glue gun so they were secured in
place, creating the effect of an abstract lions maine. At times
the hot glue gun became messy and left stringy residue
in some places, but this was easily amendable with a pair of scissors.
I must admit that I did have to rush a little when making the painted
shapes, leaving enough time for them to dry out to draw over the top
of them, therefore the colours didn't come out as concentrated as
I'd hoped. However, when assembled together, the water coloured
pieces of card created a more in depth variation alongside the
       bold pieces.

The finished photograph, taken on fujifilm instax mini 8 polaroid camera.
It was taken in an urban setting, to represent my adaptation of living in a city
for the first time.
I am pleased with the outcome, especially the way that the filter of the film
in a way masks parts of the intricate detail but still enables the bold colours
of the mask to be part of the main focal point, alongside the main Leo
symbol.
