Some of his work:
- He studied Graphic Art at Leeds Metropolitan Uni. After he graduated, he became more of a 'private artist', and worked many jobs in between becoming more successful, including being a prison guard!
- In his twenties, he and his partner embarked upon many travelling adventures, including working on summer camps in America, partaking in ski seasons and exploring south east Asia- recording in sketchbooks throughout.
- He found his first agent on BEHANCE- but there are dark places you have to go before you find an agent!
- You make important discoveries when you are a student- you don't need finished projects just yet as you are still work in progress!
Jon showed us some of his personal sketches, all done in pencil, all extremely elaborate. Although he loves his work that he is commissioned, creating pencil sketches of athromorphised characters is his way to escape and relax. His work has been influenced by his exciting life experiences so far, which is partly why his work is so flamboyant and intricate.
Character Workshop
We were given the task to think of a noun and a verb, then write it down on a piece of paper; which were then put into two boxes. One noun and one verb were picked out of the box, and individually we had just a couple of minutes to produce a character based upon this combination.
'diving jellyfish', 'dying shrimp', 'chanting wall street worker' 'painting avocado'
'skipping robot', 'shrinking condom', 'sleeping toe' 'crying fish'
'complaining bum', 'jumping sock'
Creating characters from random shapes drawn by different class members:
I really enjoyed this task and found it really helpful in using quick thinking as a skill to create a character from two words. Although quick thinking and recording aren't particularly my strongest fortes, and this is evident in my finished outcomes.
Repeating this exercise is something that I could do to improve my character development skills.
