Colour, Value and Notan

Colour is important.

It is also important to play with colour.

What role does value play in planning composition?
Adding key/mood to the picture

How can we use values to focus attention on certain information?
Contrast the values of objects next to eachother

According to the handout, what are the most commonly used basic value plans? How many values does it recommend you use in a picture?
Four values:

  • Light against dark
  • Dark against light
  • Dark and halftone against light
  • Light and dark against halftone

Notan- Notan is a Japanese concept of how light and dark within an image can create harmony, dynamicism or beauty. Notan formalises similar principles of value in the composition of artwork.

Colour- We see it differently. We feel it differently.

A colour palette is a limited swatch trying to find a relationship.

Task and Aims

Make an A4 screen print using two colours based around the starting point of 'do something good'. The aim is to bring together all of the compositional elements; it isn't essential to use ALL of the elements but at least have a think about it.

Intentions

For my finish print to reflect upon everything I have learnt in visual language.
Initial thoughts

Roughs

My roughs aren't overly exhaustive because I had a strong idea in my head of how I wanted my final image to look.

Composition

Thirds

The image applies well to the rule of thirds but does not strictly cohere to the exact and precise lines, creating a more balanced, easy going and less 'strict' composition.

Line of Sight

The long line of beach huts and sand intentionally leads the eye to the back of the image, and then to the front where the largest, most important element of the image is situated; the fish and chips!

Evaluation

Considering printing in general is a major kryptonite of mine, I am pleased with the way that the screen print has turned out, trying to incorporate the things I have learnt about constructing a good image. This has increased my knowledge and understanding of how to compose a well structured image, highlighting the key areas of clear communication between the picture and the viewer.

I feel the colour principles are fairly basic in my image, restricting them to the colour of the sea, and the sand. This has meant that the other elements have had to adapt to being either blue, yellow or green; the restricting element is good because I have experimented with using a set colour palette, but doesn't really create a feeling of harmony within the image.

Composition is my strongest element within the image, with an interesting line of sight and application of the rule of thirds, which overall creates a balanced and pleasent composition.

To conclude, my image making has been informed over the weeks by different principles of structure, which reflects to a certain degree within my screen printed image. I will continue to work on these and apply the principles to images I make in the future.

Speculative Thinking

I have been really inspired by screen printing and the beautiful images that the process can produce. I have not had the most experience with screen printing, but I am eager to explore the process in more detail and challenge myself to create and experiment with it, and even incorporate it into future briefs.
