I began to feel a little panicked due to the short amount of time that is left to finish the post cards, so I decided to get stuck straight in and start planning some ideas to do with Manchester.
Knowledge and Understanding
I carried out some quick research based on what Manchester was well known for to broaden my knowledge and found out some interesting facts to do with the city.
The main things that I thought would most clearly define Manchester were the Bee, Canals, Football and the famous painter L.S.Lowry. These things could be symbolised using the infamous smoking chimneys of the early 20th century, a traditional canal boat and the bee character kicking a football.

Problem Analysis
I drew out so many roughs but each time struggled to gain a good composition, so to help I looked at some images of canal boats to gain an understanding of the line of sight and how to create depth with particular elements within the image.

Final Composition Idea
The final thumbnail contains a line of sight from the back left corner leading to the front, where the bee character is situated. All of the elements are placed well at this stage, with the possibility of re-arranging them if need be at a later stage.
Character Development
I'd like the bee character to look simple, but still distinguishable by using interesting shapes.
Practical Skills
Just for practise, I had a go at drawing a bee in illustrator, which actually wasn't as bad as I thought. Once I'd gained a better understanding of the tools and methods of manipulation, the process wasn't so alien to me.
Now that I have been able to create a simple bee shape, this has given me the confidence to try and create more complicated shapes in illustrator. I am tempted to push myself and try and complete the Manchester postcard tomorrow.
