Greetings From...Final Evaluation

Skills and Development

This brief has been the most challenging for me, yet the most informative in terms of my personal development. Learning to use vectors and produce finished work with them in the space of three weeks is something I've really had to work hard at, yet simultaneously enjoyed and progressed on during this brief.

Working with flat shape has been restricting, but through experimentation and imagination I have been able to develop personality and character within my images that has had a positive impact on my audience.

Difficulties and Setbacks

My biggest downfall during this project, and other projects is that I panic about not finishing my work in time, which results in me not investing enough craft and time into my rough sketches. This was particularly apparent in the Manchester postcard, which ultimately impacting on the professionalism of the finished image, as well as wasting time.

In the future I will really try to discipline myself in being patient in the initial stages of a brief, and investing time into planning and developing rough sketches. This will give me more scope into completing the brief at a steady pace, and ultimately leave me satisfied and proud of all of the finished work that I produce.

Things I would change about my work

I am pleased with the majority of my individual images, but feel as if they don't work well as as a set. Each postcard includes an animal or two that represents the city, however the emphasis isn't always placed upon them in the composition. This is evident with the Bristol postcard when the animals are tiny compared to the scale of the bridge, and in other postcards e.g. Leicester, the Fox takes up at least one third of the image.

I would also consider using a more restrictive colour scheme; this would challenge me further, yet also aid in allowing the images to have closer relations with each other.

Finally I would double check the resolution of my images before printing them to prevent pixelation.

What I have gained from this brief?

Learning how to use vectors and construct images using shape has been an extremely valuable skill I have learnt during this brief, that I will definitely consider using in the future.

I have also taken the knowledge I have gained in Visual Language sessions about line of sight, depth, value etc and attempted to apply them to each of my postcard to create well structured images. This has been particularly difficult when having to use flat shape and struggling in general with the concept of composition. However my journey of successes and fallbacks have reflected within my work during this brief, and will continue to do so in the future.
